中國有句俗話叫：“死要面子活受罪”，意思是爲了維護“面子問題（issue concerning one’s reputation）”，寧願損害自己的利益。這裡的“面子”可以理解爲“face, prestige, reputation”。

中國人是非常“愛面子（be keen on face-saving）”的，在他們看來丟什麼，都不能“丟面子（lose face）”。因此在與中國人打交道時，一定要注意給對方面子（give face to somebody），千萬不要做傷對方面子（hurt somebody’s feeling）的事情。
