【英語多益通】加州建高鐵 洛城到舊金山3小時

很難想像，強大且富裕的美國竟然沒有高鐵？是的，汽車工業甚爲發達的美國，今年2015年1月初纔在加州，進行第一條高速鐵路的「破土（groundbreaking）」典禮。反觀臺灣，造就臺北－高雄一日生活圈的「高鐵」，卻面臨破產危機。如果當真發生，政府將出資四千五百億「購回」高鐵，轉爲國營。負責建造美國第一條高鐵的加州高鐵局（California High Speed Rail Authority），在它的簡介裡，告訴加州州民3個理由，爲什麼最富庶的加州需要第一條高鐵。
1. California high-speed rail will connect the mega-regions of the state, contribute to economic development, create jobs and preserve agricultural lands.（加州高速鐵路將連接本州的超級特區，對經濟發展有所貢獻，創造就業機會，以及保護農業用地。）
加州是美國第三大州，地形狹長約1,200餘公里。有Golden State（黃金之州）之稱而自豪的加州，轄區龐大，所以概分南、北加州。這條高鐵將可以連結超級經濟地區（mega-regions），對經濟發展做出貢獻，而且可以避免太多的公路而污染農地。看懂這第一句，你可以熟悉以下這3個重要的多益測驗覈心字彙：

解析：第1題的正確答案是(A)。空格前是be動詞is，片語「be responsible for…」表示「負責…」。此句表示加州高鐵局負責該高鐵的計劃、設計、建造與營運。
第2題的正確答案是(D)。「up to…」在此有「上達…；一直到…」、「到…程度」之意。答案(A)是「期間」，答案(B)是「一…立即就…」，答案(C)是「由於」，皆不符。
