羊年到了！不妨一起來學學關於羊的英文慣用語吧！有別於華人社會對於羊的印象是溫馴和順，甚至優雅美麗，西方社會使用到 goat（山羊）或sheep（綿羊）的慣用語卻以負面意思居多，舉例如下：

Get one’s goat 惹怒某人

這個用語的來源有兩種說法：一說是從早期的賽馬而來，據說賽馬者常會將安靜的山羊和賽馬飼養在同一個房間裡，藉此安頓馬兒的情緒，倘若有人將山羊偷偷牽走，馬兒就會因爲沒有山羊的陪伴變得急躁，最終輸掉比賽，馬主人當然火冒三丈。另一說是以前人們仰賴山羊供奶，山羊可謂珍貴的資產，所以牽走別人家的羊，對方當然會很火大。

新市長的坦率作風常惹怒其他人。

Act the goat 裝瘋賣傻

act the goat有相當多面向的解釋，可以說是爲了逃避責任的「裝傻」，也可解作逗人一笑的「耍笨」，有時還可形容人「瘋顛」，亦可寫作play the goat，但以act the goat較爲常見。

Stop acting the goat! This is your job. You must be responsible for it.

別裝傻了！這是你的工作，你必須負責。

Steve is a very funny person. We all like to see him playing the goat.

史蒂夫是個很搞笑的人，我們都喜歡看他耍笨。

These boys are always acting the goat. I don’t think that they can take any responsibility.

這些小鬼老是瘋瘋顛顛，我不認爲他們能承擔任何責任。

Sheep without a shepherd

烏合之衆

羊羣需要有牧羊人管理或牧羊犬帶領，才能井然有序地前進，所以沒有 shepherd 的羊羣，就引申爲「烏合之衆」。

Our competitors are just sheep without a shepherd; we can beat them easily.

我們的競爭對手不過是一羣烏合之衆，我們可以輕易地打敗他們。

The black sheep of the family

害羣之馬

由於大部分的羊都是白色，黑羊就顯得特立獨行，宛如「異類」。The black sheep of the family經常用來指「害羣之馬」或者「家族中的敗家子」。

Bruce has no job. All he does is drink, gamble and fight. Undoubtedly he is the black sheep of the family.

布魯斯沒有工作，他整天喝酒、賭博和打架。毫無疑問地，他是家族裡的敗家子。
