智利軍方稍早證實，一架載有38人的C-130運輸機9日下午4時55分飛離南部城市蓬塔阿雷納斯（Punta Arenas），原定晚間8時抵達南極基地，準備進行後勤作業，但卻在晚間6時許失聯。政府已派出救援小隊趕赴現場，全力尋找該架運輸機以及機上的失蹤人員。

BBC報導，該架運輸機當時載着17名機組員及21名乘客，外傳其中3人是平民，前往南極喬治王島（King George Island）的智利蒙塔爾瓦總統基地（Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva）。智利空軍表示，事發當下，該架軍機並沒有發出任何求救訊號，且負責駕駛的飛行員經驗相當豐富，很有可能是在燃料耗盡後被迫降落。

智利總統皮涅拉（Sebastian Pinera）表示，目前他正在首都聖地牙哥（Santiago）關注最新發展，該地區國內外的搜索也已經出動。
